Background of the Study
Dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, represents a significant public health issue among the elderly population in Nigeria, including in Katsina State. As the elderly population increases, so does the prevalence of cognitive impairments such as dementia, which requires specialized care and attention. Caregivers—typically family members or hired professionals—play a critical role in the daily management of elderly individuals with dementia. These caregivers face numerous challenges, including emotional, physical, and financial burdens (Bashir et al., 2023). While studies globally have highlighted the strain caregivers experience, there is limited research specifically on the challenges faced by caregivers of elderly dementia patients in Katsina State. This review will examine the existing literature on the specific difficulties caregivers encounter and explore strategies for improving caregiver support and training.
Statement of the Problem
The challenges faced by caregivers of elderly dementia patients in Katsina State are multifaceted and under-researched. Caregiving for individuals with dementia requires extensive time, effort, and emotional investment. The lack of training, inadequate support, and limited access to healthcare services for caregivers in rural areas of Katsina State exacerbate the situation. Caregiver stress is often high, leading to burnout, mental health issues, and in some cases, neglect of the patient’s needs. This review aims to provide insight into these challenges, which will inform policies and interventions to improve the support for caregivers.
Objectives of the Study
To identify the challenges faced by caregivers in managing elderly patients with dementia in Katsina State.
To evaluate the impact of caregiver stress and burnout on dementia care in Katsina State.
To explore the resources and training needs of caregivers in Katsina State to improve dementia care.
Research Questions
What are the primary challenges faced by caregivers in managing elderly patients with dementia in Katsina State?
How does caregiver stress and burnout affect the quality of care provided to dementia patients in Katsina State?
What resources or support systems are needed to improve caregiving for dementia patients in Katsina State?
Research Hypotheses
Caregivers in Katsina State experience significant stress and burnout due to the demands of caring for dementia patients.
Inadequate caregiver training and support systems negatively affect the quality of dementia care provided in Katsina State.
Caregivers who receive proper support and resources report lower levels of stress and improved caregiving outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This review will focus on caregivers of elderly dementia patients in Katsina State. Limitations include the potential for biased reporting of caregiver experiences and the difficulty in accessing caregivers due to privacy and logistical constraints.
